Split method

How the calculation works

Hybrid method: each person pays (rent × shared %) ÷ number of roommates plus (rent × (100% − shared %)) × their room weight ÷ total room weight. A room's weight is its size, increased by the private bathroom premium if it has one.

By bedroom size: the same as hybrid with a 0% shared share. Equal: rent ÷ number of roommates. Amounts are rounded to the cent and always add up to the full rent.

Frequently asked questions

How does this rent split calculator work?

With the hybrid method, the shared-space percentage of the rent is split equally between everyone, and the rest is split in proportion to bedroom size. Rooms with a private bathroom get their size weight increased by the bathroom premium you choose.

What shared-space percentage should we use?

Between 40% and 60% is typical. Use a higher percentage if the kitchen and living room are large and everyone uses them a lot, and a lower one if bedrooms make up most of the apartment.

Can I use square meters instead of square feet?

Yes. The calculator only uses the ratio between room sizes, so any unit works as long as you use the same one for every room.
